Enjoy NYE in Canberra but try to keep our city clean

Released 31/12/2016

For many, New Year’s Eve is a time for parties and a late evening spent in the centre of town. For others, it is the start of the huge annual clean-up effort.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris has encouraged all Canberrans heading into Civic tonight for New Year’s Eve to have a tidy New Year’s celebration.

“Tomorrow morning, while most Canberrans are fast asleep, our cleaning crews will be up before 5am working through the aftermath from New Year’s Eve, getting the city clean,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The ACT Government’s cleaning teams, including our street sweeper and garbage trucks, will be doing tasks like emptying public bins, picking up litter, cleaning toilets and cleaning the pavement.

“New Year’s Day is the biggest day of the year for our staff. Every year our crews find themselves cleaning large volumes of litter, bottles and broken glass. In short, they clean up what most others would not want to even look at.

“I hope people keep this in mind when celebrating tonight. Place rubbish in the bins provided and treat public places with respect. This will make it a lot more pleasant for others, including our cleaning crew, who work very hard to maintain our public spaces and take great pride in their work.

“If you just take that little bit of extra care while out celebrating it will save our staff a lot of work later and help keep our city clean.

“There are 47 large wheelie rubbish bins and another 37 recycling bins in the city centre and we expect them all to be filled. This amounts to about 2,500 kilograms of rubbish to be collected. We also expect our street sweeper and staff to pick up about another 600 kilograms of rubbish. It is a lot of work for a team of 12 staff to undertake.”
