Constitution Avenue traffic switch means completion one step closer

Released 03/06/2016

On Saturday 4 June 2016 a traffic switch will take place on Constitution Avenue (weather permitting). Traffic currently travelling in both directions on the southbound carriageway will be moved to one lane either side of the median. In the event of wet weather, the traffic switch will be postponed to Monday 6 June 2016 after the morning peak period.

“I am very pleased that we will shortly open up both carriageways of Constitution Avenue to one lane of traffic in each direction this week in a move that will be another major milestone before the project’s full completion,” Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said today.

“Work is progressing well on the upgrade with the reconstruction of the northern carriageway continuing. The start of this year’s tree planting season has also commenced with new trees being planted in the median and verges. Landscaping improvements are also being rolled out on the verges, including paving and seating.

“The connection of Constitution Avenue to Vernon Circle and the Parkes Way access to Allara Street, are also taking shape and it is exciting that we will be able to open up these two new roads to the public over the next two months.

“By linking Vernon Circle to Constitution Avenue motorists travelling from the eastern side of the city will have direct access to both the north and south of Canberra, via Northbourne Avenue and the Commonwealth Avenue bridge. The intersection will be signalised and synchronised with the lights at the Northbourne Avenue and London Circuit intersection. A signalised pedestrian crossing will also be part of this intersection improvement.

“Motorists will have one way access from Parkes Way left into the southern end of Allara Street. This connection will provide improved access to the southern section of the city, parking opportunities and the National Convention Centre.

“These two new connections will help to ease congestion and improve traffic flow on the broader network.

“The completed Constitution Avenue project will also feature a dedicated bus lane in each direction from Allara Street to Anzac Parade, a separated two-way cycle path in the southern verge, on-street parking and new LED street and verge lighting for the length of Constitution Avenue,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.

The Australian Government is providing $42 million for the upgrade of Constitution Avenue and an additional $2.8 million in funding has been allocated by the ACT Government to complete the connection of Constitution Avenue to Vernon Circle.
