Consortium announced for Kingston Arts Precinct

Released 08/02/2017

An experienced consortium has been successful in the tender to develop the Kingston Arts Precinct.

Land Development Agency CEO David Dawes said today that the Geocon/Fender Katsalidis/Oculus partnership had created an exciting concept for the precinct that would stand the test of time.

“The group was one of three shortlisted proponents for this project in Kingston. The government will now work the arts community on realising this vision for the site,” Mr Dawes said.

“With the successful tenderer announced, the government will now work with them and the arts community on finalising the design to ensure it meets the needs of all users. We have always maintained that the project needed to provide the right environment for the various arts organisations that will be located there, and we want to ensure their input into the final design.

“The ACT Government is also aware of the heritage aspects of the site and will ensure the final design protects and compliments these elements of the area.”

The consortium’s plans include workshops, gallery spaces and offices for arts groups, visiting artist accommodation, landscaped plazas for outdoor entertainment and events, and generous parking provisions.

Geocon’s submission delivered on the precinct objectives and provided a very good response to all the requirements in the Request for Tender.

The area has long been envisioned as a visual arts hub, with arts organisations proposed to move to the Kingston Arts Precinct including Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Craft ACT, Photo Access, Art SoundFM, M16 and some activities of the Canberra Potters’ Society. Cultural Canberra is continuing consultation with these organisations who will join existing precinct tenants, the Canberra Glassworks and Megalo print studio.

Geocon’s other projects in the ACT include Midnight, on the site of the old NRMA office on Northbourne Avenue, Wayfarer, Canberra’s tallest residential tower in Belconnen, and Abode Hotels. Fender Katsalidis Architects has New Acton, MONA and Melbourne Eureka Tower in its portfolio, and urban design and landscape architect studio Oculus has worked on Sydney’s Central Park and projects throughout Australia.
