Territory’s newest magistrate confirmed

Released 17/09/2018

The newest resident magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court has been welcomed at a special ceremony today.

Louise Taylor’s appointment as a Magistrate of the ACT Magistrates Court was announced last month.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay joined ACT judges, magistrates and the ACT’s legal profession in marking Magistrate Taylor’s appointment at a ceremonial sitting today.

“Magistrate Taylor brings a wealth of criminal law procedural knowledge and experience in representing the most vulnerable members of our community in complex matters,” Minister Ramsay said.

“With over 15 years of experience in advocacy at the highest levels, including four years as the Deputy CEO of Legal Aid ACT and experience in the offices of both the Commonwealth and ACT Directors of Public Prosecutions, Magistrate Taylor is well equipped for this challenging role.

“Magistrate Taylor’s appointment supports the strong representation of women within the ACT judiciary.

“I am also pleased to note that today’s ceremonial sitting marks the appointment of the Territory’s first Aboriginal judicial officer.

“I welcome Magistrate Taylor to the ACT Magistrates Court and look forward to her continued contribution to the ACT community in her new role.”
