Love later life with ACT Seniors Week

Released 12/03/2018

ACT Seniors Week begins today, with the theme Love later life, which aims to promote positive, healthy, and meaningful living for ACT seniors.

Minister for Veterans and Seniors Gordon Ramsay said Seniors Week provides a great opportunity for seniors in the ACT to be recognised and celebrated while learning about embracing later life.

“There is so much to love about later life in Canberra and Seniors Week is an opportunity to embrace what is on offer,” Minister Ramsay said.

“This year ACT Seniors Week is packed with events and opportunities for seniors, including the very popular Chief Minister’s Concert with the Band of the Royal Military College, the ACT Seniors Week Expo, the Positive Aging Awards ceremony, and retirement village bus tours run by Council of the Aging ACT.

“On Thursday March 15 around 4,000 people will attend the ACT Seniors Week Expo, held at Exhibition Park. Expo goers will get information on health, leisure, government, community services, legal, financial, aged care, retirement, social and special interest groups, travel and more. There is also great food and a range of entertainment and workshops at the Expo”, said Minister Ramsay.

Seniors Card holders will also be able travel for free on public transport during ACT Senior’s Week 2018.

Passengers will still need to tap their MyWay card when hopping on and off the bus, but no fare will be charged. Those without an ACT Seniors MyWay card can just present their ACT or interstate Seniors Card to the bus driver.

Seniors are also encouraged to use the week as an opportunity to have their say on the next Age Friendly City Plan which is part of a Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing survey.

“We want to ensure our city continues to evolve as an age friendly city which is inclusive and accessible to people of all ages,” said Minister Ramsay.

The survey will be open from 12 March 2018 to 12 April 2018, 5pm and available at www.yoursay.act.gov.au
