Investment drives improvement in ACT Courts

Released 25/01/2018

Investment in a new courts building, more judiciary and improved ICT management systems will drive improvements for the ACT Courts.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said that when the Courts project is finished the ACT will have modern court facilities that expand capacity for trials and alternative dispute resolution processes.

“The new buildings will improve jury and vulnerable witness facilities, enhance the custodial areas and support the use of courtroom technologies,” said Minister Ramsay.

“We have also reached a milestone in the rollout of our integrated case management system, and 2018 will see the final tranche of the ICT upgrade at the Courts.

“This means the judiciary, tribunal members and court and tribunal users will see the start of electronic lodgment of some court and tribunal documents which will lead to improved service delivery.

“The expansion of the Supreme Court bench to 5 resident judges in 2016 has also assisted in managing the work of the Supreme Court,” Minister Ramsay said.

The Supreme Court finalised a large number of civil appeal matters in 2016/17, significantly reducing the number of pending civil appeal matters in the Supreme Court.

In the Children’s Court there has been a significant improvement in the number of civil finalisations (care and protection matters) over the past two years rising from 107 finalisations in 2014/15 to 181 in 2015/16 and 208 in 2016/17.

“I anticipate introducing reforms in early 2018 to further assist in improving the efficiency of the ACT courts and tribunal,” Minister Ramsay concluded.
