Celebrating the community’s role in justice

Released 14/05/2018

Highlighting the ACT community’s valuable contribution to law and justice in the ACT is a key focus of this year’s Law Week, Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said today.

Marking the start of the ACT Law Society’s Law Week, which this year is focusing on ‘Law and Justice in Your Community’, Minister Ramsay thanked the legal profession for their contributions to law and justice in the ACT.

The Law Week program includes a range of events for the community and profession, including Supreme Court tours, presentations on disability justice and sentencing law, and the provision of free legal services on Wills Day – Friday 18th May.

“The ACT Government values the contributions of the wide range of individuals and community organisations who advocate for and work towards the vision of a safe and just Canberra for all,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Law Week has an important role in inviting the community to be involved in, aware of, and feel ownership towards, our laws and our system of justice.”

Minister Ramsay also welcomed the ACT Disability, Aged and Carer Advocacy Service (ADACAS), being chosen as the recipient of this year’s Law Week fundraising efforts.

“The ADACAS mission to assert, promote and protect the rights and responsibilities of people with disabilities, people who are older and their carers aligns strongly with my own priorities. All Canberrans should have the opportunity to participate fully in the life of our city,” Minister Ramsay said.

“People who are disadvantaged and who are vulnerable are most in need of the protections that our justice system can offer. These people are also the most at risk of being marginalised, and so ways to ensure that the law facilitates their inclusion are important.”

National Law Week runs from Monday 14 May – Saturday 19 May.
