Canberra screen artists share in $90,000 funding

Released 05/02/2018

The ACT Government has awarded eight local screen artists $90,117 to support a range of projects including short films, documentaries and script development, as part of the 2018 ACT Screen Arts Fund Minister for the Arts Gordon Ramsay announced today.

“I would like to congratulate the successful applicants of this funding. The artists’ vision and quality of work in screen activities including script development, short films and video gaming is highly commendable and showcases the artistic talent we produce in Canberra,” Minister Ramsay said.

The ACT Screen Arts Fund has been assisting local screen artists for the past six years and has proved highly successful in getting dozens of local film, television and gaming projects off the ground.

Canberra screen artist, Christian Doran, was awarded $10,000 as part of last year’s ACT Screen Arts Fund which enabled him to produce a prototype for a video game, The Last Time Traveller.

“I’m really grateful for the support of the ACT Screen Arts Fund because it’s helped develop me as an artist. It’s not always about the final product but instead giving the artist a chance to try something different and hone their skills.” Mr Doran said.

“I’ve been involved in script development in the past, but now I want to start trying to tell stories in a different format, which is why I decided to develop a video game and I was able to achieve that thanks to this funding.”

Vanessa Gazy was also previously awarded screen funding, helping her produce a short film and a mini-series.

“ACT screen arts funding has been an invaluable part of my development as a screen practitioner,” Ms Gazy said.

“My short film HIGHWAY, which has screened at festivals all over the world, is now being adopted into a feature film which I am to write and direct. Screen Canberra and artsACT support has truly enabled me to achieve what I otherwise could not.”

Minister Ramsay said “What Vanessa and Christopher have accomplished is a fantastic example of what this funding is all about and I’m looking forward to seeing the work produced by the 2018 funding recipients.”

This year’s funding has been awarded to a range of innovative projects including mentoring programs, producing a short film, The Chosen Vessel, which explores the hardships endured by Australian women in late 19th century, creating Aurora Sound VR, virtual reality interactive music software, and creating a 2D computer party game called Kid Watch.

“Screen Arts funding is critical in supporting the diversity and vibrancy of film and screen activity across Canberra, and in showcasing the calibre of our screen artists.

“The arts play a significant role in making our city vibrant, culturally rich and diverse and this government continues to provide essential support for the arts in a number of ways including funding grants like this,” Minister Ramsay concluded.

The ACT Screen Arts Fund is managed by Screen Canberra and is part of the ACT Arts Fund.

Screen Canberra is the ACT’s film, television and digital media office, and is hosted by the ACT Screen Industry Association Ltd. A full list of the 2018 recipients of the ACT Screen Arts Fund is below.
