Released 23/02/2018

Minister for the Arts and Community Events, Gordon Ramsay today rang the new Canberra Rotary Peace Bell at the official unveiling in Nara Peace Park, and announced the first inaugural peace prize winner on behalf of the Chief Minister.

“This Peace Bell has made a long journey from Japan and is a symbol of our ongoing friendship between Canberra and our sister-city Nara,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Made from melted down coins and medals from United Nations’ Member States, the bell will become an iconic part of the Canberra Nara Peace Park and demonstrates our commitment to peace and our connection to the people of Japan.

“I would like to congratulate the Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin for their vision in bringing this bell to this beautiful park. I commend all the individuals and organisations involved who generously donated their money, time and skills to bring the bell to Canberra,” Minister Ramsay said.

The Minister also presented the inaugural Chief Minister’s Rotary Peace Prize, which recognises an individual or group that has contributed to a more peaceful Canberra community.

“I would like to announce and congratulate Dr Sue Wareham OAM as the inaugural recipient of this prize. Dr Wareham is renowned for her tireless efforts to campaign for peace, through her roles with the Medical Association for Prevention of War, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and Australians for War Powers Reform,” Minister Ramsay said.

“I encourage all Canberrans to visit the Nara Peace Park to see the bell and enjoy the beautiful gardens.”
