Canberra Day celebrations announced

Released 16/02/2018

To celebrate Canberra’s 105th birthday the city will host a range of events across the Canberra Day long weekend, Minister for Community Events Gordon Ramsay announced today.

“As part of the Enlighten Festival, presented by Singapore Airlines, Canberra Day celebrations will take place on Monday 12 March at Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park. The Canberra Day long weekend is a time for us to celebrate Canberra – who we are, where we come from and what a great place Canberra is to live, work and play.

“I’m delighted to announce that Sheppard will be the headline act,” Minister Ramsay said.

Supporting Sheppard will be E^ST, Ali Barter, and Canberra’s very own Lucy Sugerman.

Canberra Day celebrations in the park will also include amusement park rides and a food and drink hub. Children’s entertainers Lah Lah’s Big Live Band will be on stage in the early afternoon.

Minister Ramsay today also revealed plans for the upcoming Canberra Balloon Spectacular, with the announcement of the two special shaped balloons for 2018.

“This year’s Canberra Balloon Spectacular will include a special shaped huge brightly coloured hummingbird, and a very green ‘Kermie’ the frog, both from the USA. They will appear alongside the other thirty or so hot air balloons which will rise high above Lake Burley Griffin and the city at dawn,” Minister Ramsay said.

Canberra Day long weekend celebrations are complimented by several other Canberra community events as part of the Enlighten Festival Canberra. Highlights include the Enlighten Balloon Glow, Lights! Canberra! Action! and Symphony in the Park, which this year features the iconic music of Queen with the Killer Queen Experience joining the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.

“These events are a great opportunity to get out and about and enjoy our beautiful city,” Minister Ramsay concluded.
