Assisting clubs diversify their activitie

Released 03/04/2018

An independent expert has been appointed by the ACT Government to provide advice that will support clubs to reduce their reliance on gaming machine revenue.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay announced that Mr Neville Stevens AO has been selected to undertake a Club Industry Diversification Support Analysis, to help achieve the Government’s commitment to reduce the number of gaming machines in the Territory and to support clubs to transition away from a dependence on income from these machines.

“The Government has a strong harm minimisation agenda, which includes a commitment to reduce the maximum number of gaming machines that can be operated in the Territory to 4,000 by 2020,” Minister Ramsay said.

“We recognise that a diverse, sustainable clubs sector offers benefits for this community and we want to preserve and strengthen those benefits as part of this commitment. I am therefore seeking expert analysis on both financial and non-financial measures that will support clubs in diversifying their income streams and reducing their reliance on gaming machine revenue.”

A report on the Club Industry Diversification Support Analysis will be provided to the Attorney-General by 31 May 2018 for consideration.

“The ACT Government’s vision is for a strong, sustainable, diverse and community-focused club sector. The Government views clubs as our partners in implementing new and more robust gambling harm reduction measures for our city,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Mr Stevens is a former Commonwealth Secretary for the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, and Department of Industry. He brings a wealth of experience and understanding in progressing significant reform within a regulated industry.

“Mr Stevens will be consulting with clubs, club peak bodies and club workers (through their unions), to look at ways to assist the industry to diversify club revenue streams.

“I look forward to reviewing the findings of his analysis and help our clubs thrive in our community,” Minister Ramsay said.
