Today we commemorate Anzac Day during the hundredth anniversary year of the end of World War One. We remember those who have served our nation and remember the fallen.

For Canberrans, Anzac Day also has local significance, commemorating those from our community who have served in our armed services, their families and loved ones. We are all grateful for their service and proud of their contribution to Australia.

Many Canberrans will be part of the Veterans March as part of the National Ceremony as we commemorate not only past service but the ongoing contribution our veterans, both serving and non-serving members of the armed forces, make to the Canberra community.

This year female veterans will march together in parades around the nation to give due recognition to the important and growing contribution women make as members of Australia’s defence forces. This initiative of By The Left seeks to recognize the sacrifices by all members of the defence forces including women veterans and their entitlement to wear their medals on the left side signifying the medals are personally earned rather than in tribute to a relative or friend.

I am proud that Canberra is home to so many veterans who make a valuable contribution to our community and workforce, both during and after their service. As we pause and reflect on Anzac Day, it is an opportunity to thank those who have served, as well as those who are still serving. We thank those who support and provide services to our veterans, both during and after their service. And we thank the family members of those who serve and the people who support them.

Lest we forget.
