ACTPS Veterans Employment Survey results released

Released 19/02/2018

Minister for Veterans, Gordon Ramsay today released the results of the first survey of Veterans currently working in the ACT Public Service (ACTPS).

The baseline results demonstrate that former Australian Defence Force personnel found the transition from an active service role to a role within the ACTPS relatively easy.

“The survey shows that former ADF members hold positions in the ACTPS across a wide range of professions including doctors, nurses, teachers, senior executives, and firefighters among others, which highlights the diversity of roles available to them,” Minister Ramsay said.

“The survey also found that 31 per cent of ACTPS Veterans are women, which is significantly higher than the national average of female members serving in the Australian Defence Force (around 15 per cent).

“We will continue to support both veterans currently working in the ACTPS, and those who are interested in transitioning to the ACTPS.

“The survey showed that we need to improve in assisting personnel translate their skills into civilian speak. To aid with this, we are working with the ADF to create a skills matching matrix to help translate from military language to that spoken in the public service

“This annual survey will assist the ACT Government in creating best practice in the recruitment and retention of former ADF personnel, and will allow us to help better target future employment opportunities to some of the most highly trained and skilled professionals in the country,” Minister Ramsay said.

The ACT Government will continue to work with the Veterans Advisory Council and the Defence Industry Advisory Board to identify other opportunities for veterans’ employment in the ACT.
