Access Canberra checks support safety at the Royal Canberra Show

Released 23/02/2018

As Canberrans flock to the Royal Canberra Show over the next three days, enjoying the festivities on offer, consider the hard work Access Canberra inspectors have undertaken in the lead up to the event to support its safety.

Minister for Regulatory Services Gordon Ramsay said that over the past few days, Access Canberra inspectors joined forces to provide a coordinated regulatory approach to support a safe environment for patrons, employees, subcontractors and vendors.

“The proactive checks demonstrate the strength of Access Canberra as inspectors from across the regulatory areas of Health Protection, WorkSafe, Building Occupations, Environment Protection Authority and Fair Trading worked together to provide seamless and comprehensive checks,” Mr Ramsay said.

Inspectors were out checking the installation of temporary structures, electrical and gas safety, movement of vehicles at the venue and doing amusement ride and food checks, with the Fair Trading team checking the safety of show bags over the past week.

Minister Ramsay said compliance had overall been high with inspections to continue over the next few days while the event is running.

“As well as ensuring compliance and enforcement where required, inspectors also importantly educate and engage with the vendors to achieve the best outcomes long-term,” Mr Ramsay said.

“It’s important to remember that the show is also a workplace for hundreds of workers so work health and safety is a key focus as well as supporting community safety. Because of this important compliance activity, our community can have confidence when they are enjoying the show,”  Mr Ramsay concluded.
