The implementation of recommendations made in the Auditor-General’s Performance Audit of WorkSafe ACT’s administrative processes of Mr Fluffy demolitions is progressing well, Minister for Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations Rachel Stephen-Smith said today.

Ms Stephen-Smith said safety remained the key priority of the government and the community can have confidence in the demolition activity underway.

“The safety record of Mr Fluffy demolitions speaks for itself with more than 550 of the 1,023 properties demolished safely in Canberra so far, which is more than 200,000 hours of demolition and remediation work.

“On any given day there are up to 120 workers on Mr Fluffy sites across the Territory and I am pleased that there have been no significant injuries sustained on sites or impact of works on the broader community.

“This type of record doesn’t happen by chance and is a result of the strong presence of WorkSafe across these sites and the ongoing commitment to education as well as enforcement in the industry.”

Minister for Regulatory Services Gordon Ramsay there were some learnings and improvements to be made around the governance arrangements of the program.

“The ACT Government has accepted all eight of the recommendations in the report which centre around improvements to administrative process, governance arrangements, record keeping and documentation of the program and the Asbestos Management Team,” Mr Ramsay said.

“WorkSafe continues to operate in a culture of continuous improvement and I am pleased that a dedicated team has been established to implement these findings and strengthen governance more broadly in WorkSafe as well as across Access Canberra.

“This will include a review of existing arrangements, identification and implementation of improvements and training of staff as needed in these areas.

“I have confidence that WorkSafe ACT will continue to be a strong presence on Mr Fluffy sites and will work closely with Head Contractors to ensure this important work for our community continues to be undertaken safely and efficiently.”
