Traders licensing changes: even easier to do business with government

Released 22/08/2017

Motor vehicle dealers, repairers and wholesalers, pawnbrokers and second hand dealers will find it easier to apply for and renew their licences under changes that come into effect today.

Minister for Regulatory Services, Gordon Ramsay, said Access Canberra now has a fully digitised licensing application process in place for these industries.  It will also source supporting documents such as police checks on behalf of applicants.

“Application information will be captured once, stored electronically and reused for subsequent or multiple licence applications and renewals,” Minister Ramsay said.

“This means less red tape and more time for business owners to focus on their business.

“The renewal registration process will be simpler and faster particularly for holders of multiple licence types.

“Previously, traders needed a licence for each of their premises, which had to be displayed.  Under the changes, only one digital licence will be required and customers will be able to easily check the business is registered by viewing the Access Canberra website at act.gov.au/accessCBR

“From today, traders will also have greater flexibility when renewing licences.

“They will have the option of renewing their licence for one or five years, saving them time and money if they choose to renew every five years.

“Busy businesses will also have the flexibility to renew their licences up to six months before the expiry date.

“The ACT Government is committed to reducing red tape.  The streamlining of licensing processes for the motor vehicle sale and repair industries, and the pawnbroker and second-hand dealer industries are another example of how we are making it easier and simpler for businesses to do business with government,” Minister Ramsay concluded.

Minimum disruption to businesses is expected when the licensing changes come into effect. Current licences will continue to be valid with the same conditions and expiry dates.
