Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay today attended a spring celebration to mark the 90th birthday of Calthorpes’ House in Red Hill.

“Today we mark the 90th year of Calthorpes’ House, one of Australia’s best preserved historic homes of the 1920s,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Calthorpes’ House is of national significance for the contribution it makes to the architectural, social and domestic history of Canberra and the nation.”

Calthorpes' House was a private residence until it was purchased by the Commonwealth Government in 1984 and later transferred to the ACT Government. It was built for Queanbeyan stock and station agent Harry Calthorpe, his wife Dell and their two daughters Del and Dawn.

“An outstanding feature of Calthorpes’ is that the house was built and occupied by the one family for its entire life as a domestic residence. So many of the original 1920s furnishings and domestic objects survive in their historical context, encapsulating of the way of life of a Canberra family during the city's early development,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Today we also celebrated the contribution of Mrs Dawn Waterhouse (nee Calthorpe), daughter of original owners Harry and Dell Calthorpe. Dawn has helped to bring the museum to life over the years through her stories about growing up in the house, many of which she has delivered directly to visitors.

“Calthorpes’ House is one of Australia’s most significant heritage assets and is managed by ACT Historic Places. It is an invaluable educational and community resource visited by thousands of people each year.”
