New lighting for CMAG announced at major glass art exhibition opening

Released 12/05/2017

Minister for Arts and Community Events, Gordon Ramsay, today announced that the 2017-18 ACT Budget would include funds for a full lighting upgrade for the Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG).  Mr Ramsay made the announcement in opening CMAG’s major new exhibition Kirstie Rea, the land: A 20 year survey.

“We are fortunate to have a renowned glass artist like Kirstie working in Canberra, sharing her unique insights into our land through her work,” Mr Ramsay said.  “The way that Kirstie’s work captures ephemeral elements of nature in the solid, yet fragile medium of glass invites us to look differently both at the world around us and our place within it.”

Mr Ramsay said that Kirstie had contributed substantially to the arts scene in Canberra over many years, starting out as one of the original Glass Workshop students at the ANU’s School of Art and Design in the 1980s, holding the position of inaugural Creative Director with the Canberra Glassworks, and more recently being awarded a Creative Fellowship there, as well as a Fellowship from the Capital Arts Patrons Organisation.

“We feel Kirstie’s passion for the land conveyed in the beautiful and compelling works included in this exhibition and in its title.  Never before has such an extensive selection of the artist's work been brought together in one place.  I encourage Canberrans and visitors to view some world-class glass art, right here on our doorstep.”

In opening the exhibition, Mr Ramsay noted that glass art is an artform that responds particularly well to light.

“And while I congratulate CMAG staff for their expert lighting of the exhibition, I’m also delighted to announce tonight that exhibitions at CMAG will soon benefit from even more brilliant lighting.”

“In this year’s ACT Budget, the ACT Government is providing funding for a major upgrade of CMAG’s lighting system.  This will allow CMAG to install new LED lights that will ensure state-of-the-art standards of lighting in gallery spaces, while also achieving improvements in energy efficiency and in conditions for the conservation of collection items.”

The free exhibition will be on display from 13 May to 20 August 2017 at the Canberra Museum and Gallery.
