New chair appointed for GRC Governing Board

Released 22/11/2017

Mr Paul Baxter has been appointed as Chair of the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission Governing Board.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said Mr Baxter would bring a wealth of knowledge and valuable experience to the position.

“I am pleased to announce and congratulate Mr Paul Baxter on his appointment as Chair of the Gambling and Racing Commission Governing Board,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Mr Baxter has served as a member of the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission Governing Board for the past two years.

“Prior to this he held a range of senior and leadership positions in regulatory, policy, and advisory positions here in the ACT and more widely in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Mr Baxter’s appointment follows an expression of interest process and he will start in the role of Chair of the Board on 24 November 2017.

The Gambling and Racing Commission Governing Board is an independent statutory authority established under the Gambling and Racing Control Act 1999 that is responsible for administering gaming laws and controlling, supervising and regulating gaming and racing activities in the ACT.

Mr Baxter replaces Mr John Haskins AO as Chair of the Board, who is retiring at the completion of his term on 23 November 2017, after five years in the position.

Minister Ramsay thanked Mr Haskins for his leadership of the board for the last five years.

“Mr Haskins has provided the Board with valuable leadership and I would like to thank him for his valuable contribution to the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission and commitment to the Board,” Minister Ramsay said.

Mr Baxter has been appointed for a period of three years and joins the other two part-time ordinary members and the Chief Executive Officer of the Commission on the Governing Board.

An expression of interest process will be used to fill the part-time ordinary member position made vacant by Mr Baxter’s appointment.
