New Associate Judge of the ACT Supreme Court

Ms Verity McWilliam has been appointed the new Associate Judge of the ACT Supreme Court, Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay announced today.

Ms McWilliam has practiced at the NSW Bar since 2006 and has a diverse range of civil litigation experience, having appeared in a wide range of courts and tribunals in the NSW and Federal jurisdictions.

“Having grown up in Canberra, completing her undergraduate degrees at the Australian National University and commencing her legal career at a local firm, Ms McWilliam has a strong connection to Canberra with family and friends here,” Mr Ramsay said.

“Ms McWilliam is highly regarded, with a firm commitment to the delivery of timely and good quality judgments.

“I congratulate Ms McWilliam on her appointment, and I am confident she will make a valuable contribution to the Supreme Court.

“Ms McWilliam’s appointment is part of this Government’s ongoing support to the effective administration of justice in the ACT.

Ms McWilliam’s areas of practice include administrative law, commercial law, criminal law, employment law and environmental/planning law. Before being called to the bar, Ms McWilliam practised as a solicitor in the NSW Crown Solicitor’s Office, and worked as an associate to two Federal Court judges. Prior to this, she worked as a solicitor for PricewaterhouseCoopers Legal in Sydney and DLA Piper in London, and as a legal associate in the Family Court of Australia, based in Canberra.

Ms McWilliam is also currently an adjunct lecturer in public law at the University of New South Wales.  She has previously lectured there in federal constitutional law and in litigation, as well as lecturing in public law at the University of Sydney between 2010 and 2014.

“I am certain the ACT community will be well served by Ms McWilliam as the new Associate Judge,” Mr Ramsay said.

Ms McWilliam’s appointment starts on 26 June 2017. The ceremonial sitting will be held on the same day.

Ms McWilliam fills the vacancy created as a result of the appointment of David Mossop as a Resident Judge of the ACT Supreme Court.
