New appointment to Gaming and Racing Commission

Released 25/07/2017

Carmel Franklin has been appointed to the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission Governing Board, Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay announced today.

Ms Franklin has been appointed for three years to fill the vacant member position on the Commission’s board.

“Ms Franklin brings a wealth of knowledge and valuable experience to this position and I congratulate her on her appointment,” Mr Ramsay said.

“She is the Director of Care Financial Counselling Service and has direct experience in assisting and providing counselling services to those from gambling harm in the community.

“In addition, Ms Franklin is involved with a number of other boards and committees in the ACT, demonstrating her commitment to and involvement with the ACT community.”

Ms Franklin replaces Ms Rebecca Vassarotti on the Board. Ms Vassarotti, who tendered her resignation earlier this year, had been a board member for two years.

“Ms Vassarotti has been a valued member of the Board and I thank her for her service,” Mr Ramsay said.

Ms Franklin’s appointment fulfils the legislative requirement that one member of the board must have knowledge, experience or qualifications related to providing counselling services to problem gamblers.

The Gambling and Racing Commission Governing Board is an independent statutory authority established under the Gambling and Racing Control Act 1999 that is responsible for controlling and regulating gaming, racing and betting activities in the ACT.
