Join the revolutionary spirit at the Canberra International Music Festival

Released 25/07/2017

Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay today launched the 2017 Canberra International Music Festival at the opening gala concert at The Fitters’ Workshop in Kingston.

Celebrating the spirit of revolution and innovation, the 2017 festival is a unique event bringing exceptional musicians and revolutionary works from around the world to Canberra audiences over 11 days from 27 April to 7 May.

The opening gala concert showcased a number of the festival’s national and international stars, including violinist Alexandre da Costa, sponsored by the High Commission of Canada; the Sìmon Bolivar String Quartet, supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Venezeula; William Barton, widely recognised as one of Australia’s leading didgeridoo players; and New York-based pianist, Lisa Moore, returning to her home town of Canberra.

“The theme of revolution reminds us that innovation and creative risk are important to the development of a dynamic and diverse arts ecology. The festival program is once again filled with exciting and unusual works performed by Australian and international artists of the highest calibre, including many of Canberra’s own celebrated musicians,” Minister Ramsay said.

Canberra is a city that loves art. I encourage people to discover the festival’s diverse program. Over the course of the Festival, there are concerts ranging from ‘Red Dragon’, Chinese traditional music performed by the China Orient Orchestra (Beijing) at the High Court of Australia; to ‘Game On! – The Digital Revolution’, featuring the music of classic and new video games performed by the Canberra Symphony Orchestra at Llewellyn Hall.  This Festival really does has something for everyone.”
The Festival is support by the ACT Government, through the ACT Arts Fund and ACT Event Fund.
