Grants to improve the lives of ACT veterans and seniors

Released 12/12/2017

Thirteen projects including dispute coach tours for veterans and digital literacy support for seniors will receive funding in the 2017 Participation Veterans and Seniors grants program, Minister for Veterans and Seniors Gordon Ramsay announced today.

“The Veterans and Seniors grants program supports both older Canberrans and veterans to maintain their wellbeing and promote social connectedness,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Community organisations were invited to apply for non-recurrent project funding of up to $10,000 with priority areas for funding related to fostering respect and inclusion of seniors; elder abuse awareness; and social inclusion of veterans.”

Projects to receive funding includes the Belconnen Community Mens’ Shed to purchase a scroll saw. The Mens’ Shed is a space for men to come together, socialise and work on projects together. The scroll saw operates at a slow speed so participants that are new to the Shed or new to the use of a saw can operate it safely.

The North Canberra branch of National Seniors Australia will receive a grant for their program which helps increase digital literacy for seniors. People will be provided with training to enable them to use computers and the internet effectively as a means of communication.

Vietnam Veterans and Veterans Federation ACT will receive funding to enable 120 of their members to take coach tours. These coach tours will encourage senior veterans, some of whom are housebound, to get out and about in their community and socialise.
