Released 25/07/2017

A new Chair of the Sentence Administration Board (SAB) along with the Deputy Chair and five part-time members have been announced by Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay.

Mr Ramsay today congratulated Ms Laura Beacroft on her appointment as Chair and Mr Don Malcolmson on his re-appointment as Deputy Chair.

“The Sentence Administration Board makes important decisions about releasing inmates at the AMC on parole.  It also oversees  parole orders  and intensive corrections orders, making decisions about whether they should be cancelled or reinstated,” Mr Ramsay said.

“It plays a crucial role in the ACT’s justice system.”

Five part-time non-judicial members of the SAB have also been appointed and include Mr Philip Moss AM, Ms Deborah Evans, Ms Janine Bromwich, Dr Judy Putt and Mr Peter Hyndal.

“The experienced leadership team and members bring a new diversity to the SAB, and significant experience in varying areas including working with vulnerable people and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” Mr Ramsay said.

“Ms Beacroft has served as a non-judicial member of the SAB since 2014 and is also a Senior Member of the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

“Ms Beacroft is an experienced leader with a demonstrated commitment to social justice and better outcomes for offenders. Her knowledge of legal issues relevant to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community will be extremely valuable as Chair of the SAB.”

Mr Malcolmson was appointed as the Deputy Chair in 2016.

Mr Ramsay also thanked out-going chair Mr Michael Chilcott for his contribution to the board over the past seven years. Mr Chilcott began as a member in 2010, before being appointed as Deputy Chair in 2011 and went on to serve as Chair in 2016.

“Mr Chilcott has been a valued member of the Sentence Administration Board over the years.  I thank him for his faithful and consistent service to the Board,” Mr Ramsay said.

Ms Beacroft, Mr Malcolmson and the five part-time members have been appointed for a period of three years.
