Celebrate Canberra Day as the capital turns 104

Released 25/07/2017

This year Canberra turns 104 and invites the community to take part in the birthday celebrations at Stage 88, Commonwealth Park on Monday 13 March, Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay announced today.

“I encourage all Canberrans to get down to Commonwealth Park from 2.00pm-7.00pm where there will be a  jam-packed program of activities the whole family can enjoy, including live music, kids’ entertainment, free amusement rides and face painting,” Mr Ramsay said.

“People are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and settle in for a relaxed afternoon of community fun.

“Presented by the ACT Government, Canberra Day is for everyone in the local Canberra community, their families and friends to celebrate our great city.”

DreamWorks’ Trolls and Shaun the Sheep will take to the stage in the early afternoon. Then, local bands String Elephants and Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers will entertain the crowds, demonstrating the strength of young music talent, home-grown here in the heart of Canberra.

From 4.30pm, DJ Havana Brown will be on stage, bringing high energy rhythm ahead of the legendary Hoodoo Gurus who will headline the performances for the day. One of Australia’s most enduring rock bands of all time, the Hoodoo Gurus are set to entertain Canberra Day revellers into the early evening.

With a diverse range of food and beverage traders, free amusement rides, face painting and games planned, more than 10,000 people are expected to attend Canberra Day and celebrate the birthday of the nation’s capital.

Free to attend, Canberra Day will commence at 2:00pm at Stage 88, Commonwealth Park. For more information go to events.act.gov.au/canberraday
