ACT Supreme Court Judge to retire

Justice Hilary Penfold PSM QC has announced that she will be retiring as Resident Judge of the Supreme Court of the ACT.Her Honour will be retiring from the bench in the first quarter of 2018, after serving as a judge of the ACT Supreme Court since February 2008.

“Justice Penfold has enjoyed a distinguished career as an ACT Supreme Court judge and as a former Commonwealth public servant,” Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said.

“Prior to her appointment as an ACT Supreme Court judge, Justice Penfold was the Commonwealth’s First Parliamentary Counsel for ten years and then appointed as Secretary of the newly-formed Department of Parliamentary Services.”

In recognition of her significant contribution to legislative drafting for the Commonwealth Government, Justice Penfold was awarded a Public Service Medal (PSM) in 2000.

In 2001, she was appointed as a Commonwealth Queen’s Counsel.

“Her Honour has made a significant contribution to the work of the court, and the wider Canberra community,” Mr Ramsay said.

“Justice Penfold was the first female Resident Judge of the Supreme Court and is known for the rigorous standards she applies in court as well as the thoughtful judgements she delivers.

“The ACT Government is already taking steps to ensure the timely appointment of a replacement resident judge and to support the ongoing efficient operation of the Court.

“As part of the selection process, expressions of interest for appointment will be sought nationally by public notice very soon and I also will be writing to key stakeholders seeking nominations of suitably qualified candidates.”
