$80,000 in funding to progress projects that support local veterans and seniors

Released 25/08/2017

Community organisations are invited to apply for non-recurrent project funding of up to $10,000 as part of the 2017-2018 Participation (Veterans and Seniors) Grants Program.

The primary aim of the grants is to support both veterans and older Canberrans to maintain their wellbeing, promote social connectedness and to enhance the ACT community through the provision of innovative projects and activities.

Priority areas for funding are:

  • Respect and inclusion of seniors;
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander veterans and seniors;
  • Elder abuse awareness; and
  • Social inclusion of veterans.

Minister for Veterans and Seniors, Gordon Ramsay, acknowledged that in ACT we celebrate active ageing and recognise the many positive ways in which older Canberrans are involved in our community.

“Australians are increasingly living longer and maintaining good health later in life is more important than ever. This presents both opportunities and challenges in ensuring people who want to remain active or remain working later on in life are able to do so,” Minister Ramsay said.

Minister Ramsay also acknowledged that the Government also has a strong commitment to honouring and supporting those in the ACT community who have served the country in the Australian Defence Force.

“Remaining active and connected participants in society is important for our veterans, as highly trained and valuable members of the Canberra community. I will continue to work to ensure the ACT is a place that is not only welcoming to our veterans, but one that is supportive of them and their families, as well,” Minister Ramsay said.

Last year, 13 grants were awarded for various projects including the establishment of a ‘Men’s Shed’ for Veterans, practicing mindfulness through creative arts, and performances of cultural singing and dancing at ACT nursing homes and retirement villages.

Grant applications close 5 October 2017.  More information and application form are available at: http://www.communityservices.act.gov.au/wac/ageing/grants
