More government services move online to make life easier

Released 30/12/2016

Construction workers and registered architects are the latest to benefit from new online services offered by Access Canberra as part of the ACT Government’s commitment to making it easier for Canberrans to work with government.

Minister for Regulatory Services, Gordon Ramsay said more than 12,000 construction occupations licensees and registered architects will transition to a single, online process that will send electronic renewal notifications. These notifications will commence this month for February 2017 renewals.

“The ACT Government is committed to investing in new technology to make our services faster and more convenient for Canberrans,” Mr Ramsay said.

“This latest update will make it easier for builders, building assessors, building surveyors, electricians, plumbers, drainers, gasfitters, gas appliance workers, works assessors and architects to renew and apply for their construction licence online – which is faster and better suited for the industry.”

More Canberrans access government services online than they do in person at a shop front, and Access Canberra is continuing to introduce more digital services to ensure the community and businesses can access services in the way that works best for them.

“More than 80 government services are already online, and transitioning to smarter, simpler processes is already having a positive effect on business, most recently in liquor licensing,” Minister Ramsay said.

“85% of Canberra’s liquor licences were renewed through a new online system this year, and the average time to process the liquor licences through the new system was less than three minutes.

“However, the Government is aware there are still many Canberrans that don’t have online access or prefer face-to-face interactions. While online services offer greater choice for Canberrans, we will always ensure there are alternate ways to do business with government such as shopfronts and traditional paper forms.”
