Electric stretchers, new ambulances roll out in ACT

Released 13/08/2018

Five new, state-of-the-art replacement ambulances have arrived, fitted with new electric stretchers.

The ACT Ambulance Service (ACTAS) fleet is being upgraded under the Government’s $4.6 million 2018-19 Budget commitment to enhance vehicle capabilities over four years.

These five new ambulances funded as part of the Government’s ongoing commitment to the ACT Emergency Service Agency (ESA) Vehicle Replacement Program, are fitted with electronic stretchers and power loaders to reduce physical demands on paramedics and improve patient safety.

Three existing ambulances have also been retrofitted with electric stretchers and power loaders, while another three ambulances that have been replaced, will be kept and maintained for use when demand on ACTAS surges during peak times.

Two additional ambulances, fitted with electric stretchers and power loaders, are also on track to join the ACTAS fleet this November.

Demand on our ACT Ambulance Service is at the highest level ever and despite growing demand, the ACT has continued to record the best response times in the country over the past six years, as well as the highest levels of patient satisfaction.

The program to rollout the electric stretchers and power loaders to all ESA ambulances is well on track to be completed by 2020.

Electric stretchers have a battery-powered hydraulic system that allows for much easier and safer carrying. It is anticipated that the use of electric stretchers will reduce the likelihood of any injuries sustained with the loading of patients into ambulances.
