Delivering on the Calwell master plan

Released 09/08/2018

The community is encouraged to provide feedback on Draft Variation 355 (DV355), which has been issued today.

DV355 relates to the Calwell Group Centre and provides for potential future development changes at the centre including to land uses, building heights and improving public spaces.

The ACT Government worked closely with the community over a number of years to develop the Calwell Group Centre Master Plan. DV355 implements the recommendations of that master plan, which outlines a vision for the centre to improve existing public spaces, encourage growth of local business, more housing options and public access to the centre.

The Calwell Group Centre Master Plan was released in September 2016 and this draft variation is the important next step. DV355 includes amendments to the Calwell Precinct Map and Code of the Territory Plan to provide guidance for future development in the Calwell Group Centre.

The following planning recommendations from the master plan form part of the draft variation:

  • encouraging a range of land uses throughout the centre by focusing commercial services into the existing CZ3 services zoned areas and promoting residential redevelopment in other areas of the centre,
  • encouraging more engaging exterior and ground floor uses
  • retaining the existing two-storey building heights across the bulk of the centre and up to four storeys in two site-specific locations outside the commercial service zoned areas, and
  • improving public spaces and pedestrian paths across the centre.

Healthy living and social activity within our communities is a priority for the ACT Government. Delivering a future vision for the Calwell Group Centre by implementing DV355 will be an important step towards encouraging an accessible and inclusive centre.

This opportunity for urban renewal is key to growing Canberra into a more prosperous, compact, liveable and sustainable city that can support increased population. We will work to make Calwell more connected, offering better places and spaces.

Public notification on the draft variation opens tomorrow and closes on Monday 24 September 2018. Visit www.planning.act.gov.au for more information.
