Call for seasonal fire fighters

Released 06/06/2018

Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman has today launched the annual recruitment drive for seasonal fire fighters calling on all interested people to apply.

“This is an exciting opportunity for people who want to contribute to the safety of our region and who enjoy working outside to join the fire management team with the Parks and Conservation Service,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The seasonal fire fighters assist with fuel reduction, fuel hazard assessment and other fire management activities on ACT Government managed land. They also help provide increased firefighting capacity for the Emergency Service’s Agency Rural Fire Service and assist with fires in remote areas.

“We are looking for people who work well in a team and are keen to learn new skills. While experience is always a good thing, the successful applicants will be given full training in bushfire fighting, chainsaw operations, driving four-wheel drives, advanced first aid, and other on-the-job duties.

“Seasonal fire fighters gain valuable skills and experience. Nearly half of last year’s seasonal fire fighters are still employed with the fire management team. There are 15 places available in the seasonal fire team, including three seasonal crew leaders.

“We welcome anybody who is interested in applying to come along for an information night held at Stromlo Depot on Cotter Road on Wednesday 20 June 2018 to learn more about the jobs and speak to current members of the team.”

For further information and to RSVP to the information night, please contact Chris Troth via email at christopher.troth@act.gov.au.

More information about the seasonal fire fighter positions can be found at www.jobs.act.gov.au. Applications close on 26 June 2018.

The Parks and Conservation Service provides over 140 fully trained and fit permanent fire fighters to assist the ACT Rural Fire Service in bushfire suppression across the ACT and surrounds.
