Work begins on Anketell Street courtyard

Released 25/07/2017

Work is under way to deliver improvements to the courtyard on Anketell Street, opposite the Hyperdome and the laneway to Lake Tuggeranong, as part of the ACT Government’s stage 1 upgrade of Anketell Street north.

Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said the upgrade will help improve access to Lake Tuggeranong and open up the popular recreational area from Anketell Street.

“The ACT Government is committed to supporting our local town centres, and improving public realm spaces and encouraging more people to use these areas,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The design for the new courtyard better utilises the potential of the area. This upgrade is designed to attract more people to use the area on a regular basis, and provide a space for community activities such as local markets.

“Some trees in poor condition and raised planter boxes will be removed and replaced with new pavers, more suitable tree species, a sculptural feature light to enhance the junction of the courtyard with Anketell Street, as well as new street furniture.”

Member for Brindabella Joy Burch said more than 400 people provided feedback through the consultation process held in 2016, with more than 75 per cent of respondents satisfied or very satisfied with the proposal.

“The key priorities of the full upgrade proposed for Anketell Street north including pedestrian and cyclist priority, tree replacement, pavement repairs and new amenities such as bins, bike racks and a water refill station were supported,” Ms Burch said. “As well as these significant improvements, community input indicated residents wanted more on-street time restricted car parks – so we’ve incorporated more  five minute parking spots into the design.”

The final design for the courtyard upgrade, as well as the concept designs for future improvements along Anketell Street between Pitman Street and Reed Street north, is available online at www.yoursay.act.gov.au.

Construction will be completed in mid 2017 and will be managed to enable day-to-day activities in the town centre to continue as usual.
