Tidbinbilla Open Day this Sunday

Released 25/07/2017

Canberrans are invited to venture out of the city to explore the foothills of the Australian Alps at the Tidbinbilla Open Day this Sunday for a day of entertainment, children’s activities and nature-based experiences.

“The annual free event will take place this Sunday 2 April 2017 from 10am to 3pm and will be a great way to spend time with family and friends in the beautiful Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve,” Minister for the Environment, Mick Gentleman said.

“Visitors are encouraged to explore the Reserve, meet local wildlife that reside in the Sanctuary or discover the many walking trails on offer at Tidbinbilla.

“Sheedy’s Picnic Area will host live entertainment and various children’s activities including the live reptile display, face painting, stage shows by Questacon and an obstacle course.

“The theme of this year’s event is Celebrating Diversity and is a chance for Canberrans to celebrate Tidbinbilla’s diverse people, habitats and heritage.

“ACT Parks’ Murumbung Rangers will lead cultural activities such as bush tucker tasting and spear throwing demonstrations whilst sharing stories of their ancestors who lived in Tidbinbilla.

“Tidbinbilla also plays a vital role in wildlife management and protection, which is something many people aren’t aware of. The Open Day will showcase the work of the successful endangered species breeding programs, such as the Southern Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby, and allow visitors to have a chat with wildlife staff.

“Pack a picnic or purchase food from a variety of stalls and enjoy this great community event with family and friends whilst experiencing the many wonders Tidbinbilla has to offer,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

A free bus service will transport visitors around the Reserve, picking up from the car park at Dalsetta to drop off and pick up locations at Sheedy’s Picnic Area and the Sanctuary.
