MRA Blanket Run warms hearts of Canberrans

Released 13/05/2017

The annual Blanket Run held by the Motorcycle Rider’s association of Canberra has once more stepped up to help those Canberrans in need during this year’s ride, Member for Brindabella Mick Gentleman said today.

“Every year for over 30 years the Motorcycle Riders Association of the ACT has brought together the Canberra community to provide donations of cash, new warm blankets, non-perishable foods and second hand motorcycle jackets to support those in our community who struggle at this time of the year,” Mr Gentleman said.

The ride which started out the front of Old Parliament House attracted around 300 motorcycle riders from across the Canberra community, who all come together for the purpose of helping those who might be doing it tough in these colder months.

“While old motorcycle jackets may seem an odd choice for a donation, for those sleeping rough, unneeded or even accident damaged motorcycle jackets are particularly well-suited to the cold weather we receive in the ACT,” Mr Gentleman said.

“This event has been run to great success for over 30 years, and it’s important that we as a community come together to try and make the lives of the less fortunate easier this winter.

“This year’s ride was particularly important to me with the recent loss of Mr Jayson Hinder. Jayson and I participated in the blanket run together for a number of years, and I am saddened that this year that was not the case,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

Donations made during the event were distributed to those in need through the amazing services of the Salvation Army.
