Local heritage to be acknowledged with Government grants

Released 04/03/2017

Minister for the Environment and Heritage today announced the opening of the annual heritage grants that continue to contribute to Canberra’s rich heritage including the many natural and cultural heritage places and objects.

“I am proud to announce the funding for this year’s grants program, a total of $351,000 will help to identify and carry out projects that promote and conserve our local heritage,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Applications for the 2017-18 grant round are open to individuals, community groups and incorporated non-profit or private organisations and I strongly encourage those passionate about heritage to apply for this funding.

“Previous examples of the heritage grants been put to work in our community include the Australian National University’s project to re-establish the heritage orchard and landscape at Mount Stromlo Observatory, and the Australian Railway Historical Society’s project to upgrade the Canberra Railway Museum platform to enable accessibility for prams, the elderly and those with special needs,” Minister Gentleman said

Priorities for the 2017-18 round include:

  • conservation works and projects that facilitate the use of and access to places entered on the ACT Heritage Register
  • community events and displays that increase the awareness and engagement of heritage places
  • projects initiated by or involving the community, including the Aboriginal community, in local heritage activities
  • projects that provide partnership opportunities between community organisations and ACT government agencies.

“The Heritage grants are a community partnership, essential in supporting the wide range of projects that protect our heritage places and objects. It’s vital that we work together to recognise, protect, conserve and celebrate unique heritage for the ACT,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

Grant application packs are available from www.environment.act.gov.au/heritage or by phoning 6207 2160.   Applications close Friday 5 May 2017 with successful grant recipients to be announced in September 2017.
