It is fitting that on World Heritage Day, also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites that we kick off the annual ACT and region Heritage Festival, Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman said today.

“The aim of the International Day for Monuments and Sites is to encourage local communities and individuals across the world to consider the importance of cultural heritage, and to promote awareness of its diversity as well as the efforts required to protect and conserve it,” Minister Gentleman said.

World Heritage Day heralds the start of the ACT Government’s Canberra and region Heritage Festival with 160 events kicking off from today.

“Notable monuments and sites in the festival include the touching memorials to those who served our country which you can learn about at Wednesday’s tour of ANZAC Parade, and the following day the beautiful sculptures of Reconciliation Place are featured in The Power of a Voice - Path to Reconciliation tour.

“This year’s Heritage Festival hosts a brilliant series of open days, tours, talks, workshops, and exhibitions celebrating what makes Canberra and our surrounds unique,” Minister Gentleman said.

The Australian Heritage Festival also begins today and will be launched by His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Patron of National Trust Australia, at Government House. The Australian Heritage Festival is coordinated by the National Trusts of Australia and supported through the Federal Government’s National Trusts Partnership Program.
