Fire fighters to doorknock local homes

Released 25/07/2017

Canberra fire fighters are preparing to doorknock local homes to ensure the community is prepared for bushfires for the remainder of the season following a long dry summer.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman today announced the latest initiative of the CBR Bushfire Ready Campaign would start tomorrow.

“This part of the campaign involves fire fighters from ACT Fire & Rescue and the ACT Rural Fire Service, along with Community Fire Unit members going from door-to-door to talk to residents about what they need to do to reduce the impact of bushfires on their homes, families, neighbours and friends,” Minister Gentleman said.

“I encourage those who receive a knock on the door from tomorrow to make the most of the opportunity and spend some time with your local firefighters to learn what you should be doing to protect yourself,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The capitals Official Bushfire Season continues until 31 March. However, there is still a significant grass fuel load across the Territory that has dried out and will burn very easily. The ACT Government is continuing to reduce this fuel load through mowing and strategic grazing practices.

“The temperatures are forecast to continue to be high till the end of the month with little prospect of any good soaking rains. You only have to look to the grass fire at Carwoola last month to see how quickly devastation can occur.

“This is the third year the ESA has undertaken the CBR Bushfire Ready Doorknock. Suburbs to be targeted this time around include Aranda, Bruce, Calwell, Giralang, Hackett, Isaacs, Kaleen, Latham, Lyneham, O’Connor, Nicholls, O’Malley and Watson,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
