Denman prospect street names honour activists

Released 25/07/2017

The streets of Denman Prospect in Molonglo Valley are being named after people and places linked to activism and reform, Planning and Land Management Minister, Mick Gentleman said today.

"I am very pleased to see on International Women’s Day that the Place Names Committee has in particular recommended so many inspiring and dynamic women for commemoration,” Minister Gentleman said.

Commemorated in Ada Norris Avenue, Dame Ada Norris DBE, CMG was president of the National Council of Women of Victoria from 1951-54 and national president from 1967-70 where she contributed to shaping public opinion and influencing legislation about issues of women’s rights, status and opportunities.

Freebury Street commemorates feminist and civil liberty activist Julia Trubridge-Freebury, a prominent activist for the campaign to repeal abortion law in NSW during the 1960s-1970s.

“A little closer to home Rigby Street commemorates disability advocate Norma Rigby MBE who helped to establish Canberra’s Koomarri school and spent much of her life working for the rights of people with a disability or mental illness,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

Other streets in Denman Prospect include:

  • Eggins Street - Evan Eggins, health reform advocate and transplant recipient
  • Felstead Vista - Minnie Felstead, union organiser and advocate for women’s rights
  • Golgerth Street - Joyce Golgerth, anti conscription activist
  • McMichael Terrace - Tony McMichael AO, epidemiologist and environmental health researcher
  • Eureka Way – commemorating the Eureka Stockade uprising in 1854.
