Carnival atmosphere takes over Canberra’s city centre

Released 25/07/2017

Showtime in the City brings the best of the ActewAGL Royal Canberra Show to the city centre, with dagwood dogs, show bags and baby farm animals all on offer between 10 and 11 February, in Petrie Plaza.

Off the back of a program of successful festive activities, this free event gives families another reason to enjoy one of Canberra’s great city spaces and is part of the government’s City Action Plan.

Minister for Urban Renewal, Mick Gentleman, said making Canberra’s city centre a safer, more vibrant place to enjoy events like the Showtime in the City were key to the City Action Plan’s success.

“Petrie Plaza is already home to our iconic carousel, and it has the potential to become a busy, much loved part of our city centre,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Hosting events like the Showtime in the City will allow us to see how people access and use these spaces for this sort of event and how the Government can assist in making the area more approachable and more appealing in the future, particularly for families.”

“Accessibility, safety and vibrancy are some of the City Action Plan’s key objectives for our city. We want to create a space all Canberrans can take ownership of and have pride in.”

“So whether you are young, or young at heart, I would encourage anyone using the city on Friday night after work or during the day on Saturday, to drop by and take part in the carnival atmosphere, before the official show takes place at EPIC, later in February,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

Showtime in the City also provides the community with an opportunity to buy show tickets early at the ActewAGL Assist Store. The Showtime in the City is a partnership between the ACT Government, the Royal National Capital Agricultural Society and ActewAGL.

Showtime in the City will take place in Petrie Plaza 10 February, 4.30 pm– 9.30pm and 11 February 10am – 4pm.
