Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman today announced that the ACT will join the National Firearms Amnesty that commences on 1 July 2017.
Minister Gentleman said that the Government is committed to ensuring that Canberra remains a safe city, and our participation in the National Firearms Amnesty enforces this commitment.
“Now is the time to act, not only will all participants avoid prosecution, they will also help keep Canberra safe by ensuring unregistered and unlawful firearms don’t fall into the wrong hands,” Minister Gentleman said.
“The ACT Government remains at the forefront of gun law reforms in this country, having recently become the first jurisdiction to restrict access to lever action shotguns.”
“It’s important that anyone in possession of these unregistered or unlawful firearms turn them in during this amnesty period to ensure that Canberra remains a safe place, and to make sure that these firearms do not make it into the wrong hands.”
The National Firearms Amnesty was announced by the Commonwealth Minister for Justice Michael Keenan earlier this year. During the amnesty period those in possession of unlawful, or unregistered firearms and firearms related components can turn the weapons over to police without repercussion.
The National Firearm Amnesty surrender location in the ACT is the AFP Firearms Registry, 86 Vicars Street, Mitchell.
