ACT Fire & Rescue boosted with interstate recruits

Released 03/11/2017

Nine additional firefighters will boost the ranks of ACT Fire & Rescue following their completion of the Recruit College program today.

The firefighters formally graduated today after successfully completing a nine-week familiarisation and induction program at the Emergency Services Agency Training Centre in Hume.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman welcomed the new recruits to the ACT.

“I congratulate all the new ACT Fire and Rescue recruits who responded to advertisements earlier this year to come and work in the ACT,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The recruits come to the ACT with experience working with other fire services interstate. One came from NSW, one from Victoria, two from Queensland and five from the Northern Territory.

“They’ve brought a range of experience to the Territory ranging from 2 to 15 years on the job and will fill positions created by retirements.”

The recruits underwent re-training areas including first aid, breathing apparatus, pumping, hazmat, compressed air foam systems, wildfire, road accident rescue, confined space rescues, structural firefighting and confined space rescue, four-wheel driving, chainsaw operation, compressed gasses, navigation and electrical safety.

“I wish our new firefighters well in their careers protecting the Canberra community,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
