Heritage Festival reaches new markets

Released 25/07/2017

The 34th Canberra & Region Heritage Festival had outstanding success reaching new markets this year with 63% of participants having not attended a festival event previously. And more than 20,000 people attending the 160 events held over April 2016.

“This year’s theme of ‘Discovery and Rediscoveries’ provided many locals with the opportunity to view their local area with new eyes. Locals were invited to re-explore their region and learn something new,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Overwhelmingly, participants praised the quality of the events saying they were accessible and the tour guides engaging, friendly and very knowledgeable.

“There was a large variety of events to choose from such as the Urban Polaris – a combined cycling/orienteering event where teams of two navigated their way to 38 historic sites throughout the ACT.  Feedback provided by participants indicated this event was an enjoyable discovery tour of Canberra suitable for a range of fitness levels.

“A highlight for walkers on the ‘Rediscover Yarralumla’ tour was learning about the tree plantings and heritage listed incinerator within the Royal Canberra Golf Course.  This tour was led by members of the ACT Heritage Council.

“Another popular event was the Jane Austen Festival where people dressed up in Regency costume and celebrated the life and works of Jane Austen. This event has a national following and was attended by 300 people.

“Regional events also attracted large crowds.  Queanbeyan’s 13 events brought in over 9,000 people, the Wooback at Yass attracted 5,000, and Gardens of the Monaro saw 470 people attend.

“I would like to thank event organisers for the high calibre events this year and their continued contribution to making Canberra such a vibrant place to live,” Minister Gentleman said.

Planning for next year’s festival will begin in October 2016.
