Emergency Services Agency Staff & Volunteers honoured at 2016 National Medal Ceremony

Released 25/07/2017

42 ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) personnel have today been presented with medals, clasps and awards by Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman as part of the ESA’s National Medal Ceremony.

“The National Medal acknowledges the dedication and long service of those who have worked for or volunteered with the ESA for 15 years, whether it be with the ACT Ambulance Service, ACT Fire & Rescue, the ACT Rural Fire Service or the ACT State Emergency Service. What all of our staff and volunteers do is difficult and often dangerous work,” Minister Gentleman said.

“They routinely place themselves in harm’s way in order to keep Canberrans safe, and to remain committed to the agency for that length of time is truly remarkable and worthy of recognition.

“On top of the National Medal for 15 years of service, a clasp is given to those who have served for a further 10 years.

“Today, seven people were awarded a first clasp and six received a second clasp. All-in-all, the group being recognised here today represents 820 years of service combined.

“Three members of ACT Fire & Rescue also received the St. John Save a Life Award.  This award is given to those who directly contribute, through the application of first-aid skills, to saving someone’s life.

“I wish to personally thank each and every one of our recipients for their tireless dedication to the ACT Emergency Services Agency and to the people of Canberra and surrounds. Your commitment to protecting the community should serve as an example to us all and this city is a safer place as a result of your exceptional efforts,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
