Deakin Charity House sale raises more than $2m

Released 06/11/2016

Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said the auction of two charity houses yesterday built on blocks of land donated by the ACT Government will lead to about $2.2 million dollars being raised for three Canberra charities that assist people with disabilities.

The Deakin Charity House project is a partnership between the ACT Land Development Agency and the Master Builders Association of the ACT.

The profits from the sale of the houses at 63 and 65 Buxton Street in Deakin will be shared by Boundless Playground, Hands Across Canberra and Hartley Lifecare.

“It is fantastic to see such a wonderful result for these local charities and I’m sure the roughly $2.2 million raised will be of great use in helping them help the Canberra community,” Minister Gentleman said.

“This is the third time the government has partnered with the MBA on a charity house project and this outstanding result shows what can be achieved for the ACT community when we work together for a good cause.

“These two high-quality houses have been beautifully designed and built in a fantastic area. I hope they bring as much satisfaction to the people who have bought them as their sale will to the people who will be helped by the charities that are being supported.

“I congratulate all of the MBA’s contractors and suppliers who donated their time and services, especially the project’s principal builder, Andrew Kerec of Renaissance Homes, who have helped make this ambitious charity project a reality,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

Both houses have achieved certification from Livable Housing Australia with high levels of accessibility and adaptability.

This is the third time the LDA has donated land to a charity house project with the Jenolan Charity House (Harrison) in 2008 raising more than $270,000 and the Franklin Charity House in 2013 raising more than $580,000
