Canberra’s newest retirement village

Released 06/09/2016

Minister for Planning and Land Management today attended a sod turning event in Tuggeranong, kick starting construction for Canberra’s newest retirement village.

“This is an important development that will significantly contribute to rejuvenating the Tuggeranong region,” Minister Gentleman said.

“With around 140 units planned, the retirement village will be a welcome addition to Kambah’s community. I commend Hindmarsh for beginning work on this site and their third retirement village here in the ACT.

“Canberrans are fortunate to have some of the longest life expectancies in the country. As our community ages, it is important that we make sure residents are empowered to lead healthy and active lives and can contribute meaningfully to our community.

“The ACT Government is committed to helping our community in this regard. By providing a range of housing options, aging residents can choose to retire locally and maintain important social connections. Retirement villages make up an important piece of this puzzle, meeting significant demand for senior living options in Canberra’s south.

“In addition to broadening housing choice, this development will provide a wide range of social, cultural and economic opportunities for the Tuggeranong area.

“Canberra is structured around a number of city centres and community hubs. As the city grows into its potential the ACT Government wants to ensure that a strong town centre provides a range of opportunities for residents to live close to work and key public transport routes. In this respect, Marigal Gardens retirement village will be a welcome addition to the Tuggeranong community.” Minister Gentleman concluded.
