Canberra gears up for the National Capital Rally

Released 25/07/2017

Member for Brindabella and long time rally competitor Mick Gentleman has today launched the ACT Round of the Australian Rally Championship, the National Capital Rally.

“The National Capital Rally is Canberra’s biggest motorsport event, attracting over 10,000 spectators over three days,” Minister Gentleman.

“Promoted and organised by Brindabella Motor Sport Club volunteers, the 2016 National Capital Rally will be staged as the second round of the Australian Rally Championship – featuring prominent Australian rally drivers Mark Pedder and Eli Evans, along with an array of talented locals including Adrian Coppin, Mick Patton and rallying legend Neal Bates.

The event will commence with a Ceremonial Start and a short spectator stage at Acton’s Westside precinct on Friday 27 May. Saturday’s rally stages will be based in Kowen Forest, while Sunday’s stages will take place around the Cotter, showcasing the best of the bush capital.

The 2016 event has also been nominated as a round of the FIA Pacific Cup, a world level regional championship for the Pacific Region, where experienced competitors will compete against the clock in modified vehicles that provide fantastic viewing for spectators of all ages.

On the back of a successful 2015 event, the 2016 National Capital Rally will again look to attract strong levels of interstate visitation for the ACT. The 2016 event will also be broadcast on national television, providing a fantastic opportunity to further highlight Canberra’s credentials as a major events destination.

“The ACT Government is proud to support the 2016 National Capital Rally through the ACT Event Fund, which has helped facilitate the addition of the rally stage at Westside. Having a visible presence adjacent to the city centre and Lake Burley Griffin is a fantastic initiative that will improve the event’s overall spectator experience – particularly for families.

“Events such as the National Capital Rally generate economic activity across the local region, provide an important boost for our tourism industry, enhance community pride and engagement while also reinforcing Canberra’s enviable position as a great place to live, visit and invest.

“As such, I encourage locals and visitors alike to soak up the exciting atmosphere at this year’s event,” Minister Gentleman concluded
