Applications open for new Healthy Country Manager

Released 11/11/2016

Applications are now open for a new and exciting Indigenous Identified position in the ACT Parks and Conservation Service that will help improve delivery of cultural programs and initiatives across our parks and reserves in conjunction with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

"The Healthy Country Manager will lead a small and dynamic team dedicated to implementing activities that educate, protect and promote the cultural landscape," Minister for the Environment and Heritage Mick Gentleman said today.

"The role will be responsible for initiating new and innovative community engagement, interpretation, conservation, land and water management projects with local Traditional Custodians and the wider local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.

"The successful applicant will also manage the Murumbung Ranger program which consists of several Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff based in different Parks and Conservation depots who work on specific projects in collaboration with the Healthy Country team.

"We are looking for someone who has extensive experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in an environmental or cultural heritage context as well as someone who is innovative, strategic and has strong liaison and management skills. As an identified position, the role is only open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

"The Healthy Country Manager will play a pivotal role in delivering outcomes in the National Water Initiative and the Murray Darling Basin Plan, which recognises Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people as legitimate stakeholders in water management and acknowledges the importance cultural water flows provide to improving spiritual, environmental, social and economic benefits to Aboriginal nations.

"I encourage suitably experienced candidates to apply for this exciting new position and look forward to seeing the positive work that is implemented by the Healthy Country Manager and their team."

Healthy Country builds on the ACT Government's long term commitment to the Aboriginal Ranger program and implements a range of cultural interpretation, community engagement, heritage, fire, water and land management activities across the ACT.

Applications for the Healthy Country Manager close on 17 November 2016. For more information and to apply visit www.jobs.act.gov.au
