Marion Mahony gets the view from Mt Ainslie

Released 22/11/2013

Chief Minister, Katy Gallagher, has recognised Marion Mahony Griffin's role in the winning submission for the design of Canberra with the renaming of Mt Ainslie lookout to the Marion Mahony Griffin View today.

"This significant site will now formally honour the architect, wife and professional collaborator of Walter Burley Griffin," the Chief Minister said.

"Often all credit for the design of Canberra is given to Walter Burley Griffin, however, his wife Marion Mahony Griffin also had a significant and influential role in designing the Canberra we know and love today."

The Chief Minister unveiled a sign on site depicting Marion's triptych 'View From Summit of Mount Ainslie' reproduced in its original size.

"Marion's input into Walter's grand Canberra design was both crucial and seamlessly integrated. It is astonishing that her watercolours accompanying their entry capture the Australian landscape so faithfully when neither Walter nor Marion had ever been to Australia," the Chief Minister said.

"The View is one of a suite of paintings that were listed in 2003 in the Australian Memory of the World Register, endorsed by UNESCO."

Another role of Marion's was ensuring that the Griffin entry did not miss the last boat from the USA to meet the deadline.

The proposal to name the viewing platform in honour of Marion Mahony Griffin was endorsed by the ACT Place Names Committee, ACT Heritage, ACT Parks and City Services and representatives of the Walter Burley Griffin Society in April 2013.

"I wish to thank the collaborative work of all those who have worked to make this important place naming happen and for acknowledging the crucial contribution that Marion Mahony Griffin made to the development of our city and the national capital all those years ago," the Chief Minister concluded.
