Calvary Hospital Intensive Care Unit goes paperless

Released 26/07/2013

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Calvary Hospital are now using an electronic clinical information system following the successful roll-out of the new ICT system MetaVision, Chief Minister and Minister for Health, Katy Gallagher, announced today.

"MetaVision is a paperless clinical information system, which enables staff to manage all clinical documentation electronically. All patient notes, medication details, assessments, and patient observations for ICU and CCU patients at Calvary Hospital are now recorded electronically.

"Both major hospitals within the ACT are now using the MetaVision information system within their Intensive Care Unit.

"This system facilitates improved clinical outcomes by providing an integrated and complete view of patient health information at the point of care, and improves patient safety by reducing transcription and documentation errors.

"The Canberra Hospital ICU has been using the MetaVision system for approximately 2.5 years, and now that Calvary Hospital is online, it means that when a patient is transferred between the two ICUs the treating team has timely access to the patient's treatment information provided from the other hospital.

"This continues the process of introducing common systems across ACT public hospitals, to the benefit of patients and clinicians. The use of common systems also enhances the networking of services across the Territory."

Calvary Health Care ACT CEO, Ray Dennis welcomed the development.  "The paperless ICU is designed to improve the capture of information to assist with clinical decision making, so that healthcare professionals spend less time worrying about documentation, and more time focused on the provision of high quality healthcare services," Mr Dennis said.
