Released 10/06/2012
Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher MLA today released the regulatory impact statement on the proposal to display food establishments' inspection results at their entrance.
'Scores on Doors' schemes operate in cities around the world and a scheme in Canberra is a step closer with the completion of the regulatory impact statement, which considers four different options ranging from an entirely voluntary scheme to a mandatory one.
"A 'Scores on Doors' scheme has the potential to make food safer, make food regulations more transparent and cut the social and economic costs of food borne illnesses," the Chief Minister said.
The ACT Government Health Directorate commissioned a regulatory impact statement from KPMG in August 2011. A consultation paper was released and a number of forums in late August and early September 2011 were held to discuss the proposal.
"We have now received the final copy of a comprehensive regulatory impact statement. The statement explores four options for 'Scores on Doors', highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each option," the Chief Minister said.
The regulatory impact statement found 'Scores on Doors' had successfully increased food hygiene standards in the United States, Canada and Denmark.
"The next step, in line with an open government approach is to put the statement online for the public to review," the Chief Minister said.
"The regulatory impact statement is a step forward. There is still much work to be done. The regulatory impact statement will assist the ACT Government in deciding on future food regulation proposals.
"I have asked the Health Directorate to review the regulatory impact statement and provide advice to the government on the options," the Chief Minister concluded.
The regulatory impact statement will be available from www.health.act.gov.au/foodsafety or can be viewed here.
